Same Sex Marriages

South Africa has become the fifth country in the world, and the first in Africa, to allow legal marriages between same-sex couple.

South Africa is the perfect place to celebrate your same sex union. Imagine getting married on a beach watching the sunset or maybe you say your vows on top of Table Mountain in one of the world’s premier gay capitals - Cape Town.

According to the terms of the act, anyone 18 years or older may enter into a civil union, which is essentially a legal formalisation of a relationship between two people.

Documents which are required when foreigners want to celebrate a Civil Union / Same Sex Marriage in South Africa:
  • Original Passport of each spouse
  • Copies of Passport of each spouse
  • Valid permit to South Africa
  • 3 passport sized photos of each spouse
  • A letter of no lawful impediment – or an official letter stipulating your marital status
  • This is NOT essential. But many couples do this: A letter from attorney/notary certifying that we have entered into an Ante nuptial contract, if the couple so desired.
  • Legible copies of the divorce order/death certificate if applicable if any partner was previously legally "attached".
  • Some foreign nationals have a Certificate of Civil Status. Some countries do not have this. In any eventuality: all foreigners marry in SA need an affidavit declaring their marital status in their country of birth, which will be prepared by us and signed by you on your wedding day
